Spring Play

This past week, while most students were counting down the days until spring break, the drama department at Minneapolis Junior-Senior High worked hard preparing to bring the stage to life with their production of The Audition and the Rehearsal, a comedic yet heartwarming exploration of the world of theater. The play occurred at MJSHS with a matinee performance on Thursday afternoon and two evening performances, one on Thursday and one on Friday.

Written by Don Zolidis, The Audition and the Rehearsal follows a group of eccentric characters as they prepare for a theater production. The story focuses on the challenge of a young teacher attempting to pull off a production of Guys and Dolls with a power-hungry stage manager, a lead who is convinced that Wicked is a much better show, and a girl who is clinically incapable of following directions (citing a doctor’s note to prove it). As if those challenges were not enough—during the audition it becomes clear they don’t have enough guys, singers, or dancers! The Audition and the Rehearsal is a hilarious yet realistic look behind the scenes of a high school drama production.

While speaking with Mrs. Clark before Friday evening’s production, she noted, “This is an excellent play that helps students build confidence, and that is important to me!” As the final applause for the play concluded, Mrs. Clark asked her students in front of the audience, “Raise your hand if this was your first play?” Immediately, about 1/3 of the hands were raised. This author was impressed to see that so many students were willing to take a risk. Too often, students and adults shy away from participating in a play or musical because they say they cannot act or sing. Mrs. Clark’s encouragement and mentoring remind us that everyone has a role to play if they are willing to take a risk!

A special thank you to all the students, staff, parents, and community members involved in making the spring play a smashing success! Lion Pride!
