Although wintery weather kept students out of class for two days this week, MJSHS NHS students cooked up a storm of their own.
After school on Friday, a dedicated group of MJSHS NHS students rolled up their sleeves after school to make 279 delicious bierocks for a fundraising event to commence at the Friday night basketball game against Beloit.
Selling for just $5 each, the homemade bierocks were prepared fresh with a savory filling of seasoned ground beef, onions, cabbage, and a hint of seasoning; all enveloped in a golden, soft dough. The hearty pastries are the perfect balance of crispy and tender, making them a beloved treat for all ages.
The NHS fundraiser provided a tasty snack for the community and taught students valuable teamwork, cooking, and entrepreneurship skills. Students learned the intricate art of cutting and rolling up bierocks, working efficiently as a group to meet the goal of 279 delicious pieces. They also gained hands-on experience in marketing and fundraising, managing orders, and working within a budget to maximize the event's success.
USD 239 Food Service Director Ilene Mullen helped prepare the dough and meat ahead of time; she stated, "After showing the students how to cut out the pieces, add cheese, and roll up the meat--they finished the rest. They did an excellent job!"
North Ottawa County Public School is dedicated to providing students with hands-on learning experiences that promote academic growth, career skills, and community engagement. This is part of the district's ongoing vision to cultivate the best place to live, learn, and work.
